Numerical Simulation in the Process and Manufacturing Industries

Funding from the European Union's Leonardo da Vinci programme has enabled the production of a set of online training courses for numerical simulation in the process and manufacturing industries. Written by a consortium of eight partners from five European nations, the NumSimpmi training material has been targeted at four critical industrial themes:

  • Casting
  • Forging
  • Extrusion
  • Stamping

Computer simulation of these operations now offers enormous benefits in terms of reduced product lead times, energy savings, waste minimisation and enhanced quality assurance. However, a major barrier to the adoption of this technology is often the lack of an adequate skill base within the companies concerned, and the aim of this project has been to address this. In total 24 modules have been written, and the student can select from these to tailor the course to a specific theme.

There is no charge for anyone in the European Union who wishes to study the material, which is available in html format that can be read by a standard web browser. However we do ask potential users to register with us to get a username and password.

These courses have been approved for Professional Development by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Professional development is the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional, managerial and technical duties throughout the practitioner’s working life.
